Athanasius of Alexandria (ca. 296–373) is a central figure in patristic Christology and spirituality. As bishop of Alexandria after the council of Nicaea, he endured five exiles while maintaining his steadfast defense of the Trinity and the Incarnation. For centuries, Athanasius has been venerated as a saint by churches in the East and West.
